Questions and answers

What attracted you towards Make-up, and is there a story behind why did you choose this profession?

I was more interested in choosing something creative as a career. Growing up, I saw several transformations with makeup as a young girl. And I found that to be intriguing. I realized that makeup is an art form. One can have a simple day or wedding day glamor, just with a different touch of makeup. It helps one not only to look but feel prettier and confident. So more or less, my mother is one of the primary reasons I took up makeup as a profession.

Consider a scenario in which a client specifically asks for a particular type of makeup, but you notice that it won’t suit her, how would you handle it?

Practice a STAR-Method Story. The STAR method is a proven strategy designed to help you tell a clear story about your persuasion capabilities. This ensures one to highlight a moment that worked as well as their talent. After all, the goal is to impress the client with skills and the right suggestions. Each letter stands for a specific step:

Situation: A detailed explanation of the background to give a clear context.

Task: Describe what was accomplished and the challenges you faced.

Actions: Explain the steps you took to convince other parties of your point of view.

Results: Highlight the outcome and what it helped you accomplish.

You have stated that your feature in Journal 9000 magazine was your first one. How did you feel when your talent was finally recognized?

I felt satisfied and thrilled with that feature by Journal 9000. It always feels good to be recognized for one’s work. Appreciation can change one’s day, or perhaps life too.

Do you have any difference between how society perceives the profession of a make-up artist at present and the past?

Social Media in today’s world is reshaping the beauty industry. Before, beauticians relied on word-of-mouth for better opportunities. Now, there are new doors and challenges. The industry keeps evolving, just like fashion. This generation also starts using makeup at a very early age, compared to what happened in the past. The society has grown as well, as to what makeup is and represents.

You also conduct classes and workshops for aspiring makeup artists. Are they theme-based, and what do you cover in those classes?

I have conducted a lot of workshops and seminars in various countries. It’s an excellent opportunity for beginners to learn and fail safely. And yes, they are theme-based classes where the learner learns a lot more than just applying makeup.

Can you take us through your process of face painting? Is there anything you apply on the face before applying the products?

It is my most favorite task— to paint faces. It’s a useful skill at birthday parties, any school functions or Halloween. One needs to put together a kit of elements like face-paint, brushes, and mirrors.

Remember these important points:

Get an assortment of non-toxic paints.

Stock up face-painting brushes with thin tips for smaller details and flat, wide ones for extensive details.

Water will be required in a plastic cup to mix the colors and rinse the brush.

Use cosmetic grade glitter. They’re harmless and essential.

Use a photo for reference and look at it from time to time to make sure you’re painting the design right.

Add the base of your design with a sponge

Add a second color to the base for a more intricate design.

Let the first coat of paint dry. Check after a few minutes.

Use your brushes to add detail to the design. Use a thin brush to add shadows and highlights with black and white paint.

Fix mistakes with a baby wipe. Gently brush the baby wipe over the spot you want to erase.

Show your work to family or friends. Add more details the next time you draw.

Use moisturizing cream only before starting the process.

You also make Tik Tok videos with your husband, Arbaaz. How did you guys support each other in your respective professions, and does he give any inputs?

We used to make a lot of videos on TikTok together. If you’ve seen any, you’ll know that he’s terrible at acting. But we love each other wholeheartedly. He’s always there for me whenever I need him- both professionally and personally. We share our experiences and encourage one and the other, no matter what. He taught me to be proud of what I do and gave me the confidence to do it. He appreciates everything I do on my own.

How do you balance your work-life and professional life?

The best way is to avoid multitasking. It dramatically reduces stress and improves outcomes at work. I draw the line between work and life. If I sit for a meal with the family, every other thing is turned away. If one mixes elements up, one will end up creating a mess. Utilizing time and punctuality with work is exceptionally crucial.

What does a typical day in your life look like during this lockdown period? How do you keep yourselves positive?

Well, with the lockdown, I learn and sharpen my skills a lot more. I give online makeup tutorials, and after that I Netflix And Chill. Then I scroll through Pinterest and do some shopping on the internet. I recruit friends to play games with me. I later clean my makeup brushes and do some Yoga. But the best thing of all is to tease my husband when he’s doing something important.

What is the most memorable incident so far in your make up career? Any particular public figure you wish to style in the future?

The most memorable part for me is my first client after the completion of my course in Dubai. I understood the work at ground level then. Referring to the second half of the question, I’d love to do a makeover for Jacqueline Fernandez and Deepika Padukone.

They say, 'You are what you wear.’ Do you think makeup defines one's personality? Give us some thoughts on that?

Personal appearance matters a lot because it shows how a person is. Makeup is used as an aid to the flaws one has and to make one feel confident. For many women, cosmetics are part of their daily routine. It has become something considered to stabilize youth and beauty. Several makeup products make one feel better. One uses them to enhance the way one looks or feels about oneself.

Can you give us some tips on how to apply makeup quickly, ensuring that it doesn't look messy?

Super Easy Makeup Steps: How to Look Flawless—Fast!

  • Hydrate the Skin

The first and essential step in makeup is to moisturize. Hydrate the skin for flawless makeup. The best way is to prime with moisturizer. There are two formulas, one for dry skin and the other for oily skin. And it’s light in weight.

  • Hide Dark Circles

Start by using concealer on your under eyes area. Choose a shade that matches your skin tone.

  • Perfect Your Base

To get a perfectly even skin use a foundation stick. Draw thick lines down cheekbones, the sides of your nose and above brows, and blend with your fingers.

  • Infuse Your Cheeks with Color.

Use a cream blush instead of brush and powder to get that glow from within effect. Apply the blush in your cheekbones then blend the color up towards your temple with your fingers.

  • Apply Shimmery Eye Base.

For getting the professional eye makeup look in no time apply cream shadow from your lash lines to brow bones using your pointer finger.

  • Make Your Eyes Pop

Apply the bronze shade in your creases with a flat shadow brush for more control, and use your fingers to smudge it down over the lids. Avoid harsh lines and blend it smoothly.

  • Touch Up Your Brows

Eyebrows are game-changers. Lightly fill in any gaps and use a disposable mascara wand to brush the hairs up.

  • Get Lush-Looking Lips

First, soften chapped lips by gently buffing them with a damp washcloth and follow it up with lip balm. Blot with a tissue if it feels slippery.

How would you style the woman in your family and extended family?

It doesn’t matter if they are my client or family member; I will always give my best shot at helping them. That would be suggesting the best ideas and elements according to their themes, among others.

Do you feel the pressure of continually posting on social media? If yes, how do you handle it?

I do feel pressured a lot of times. The people one spends time with eventually impact one. So, thirteen or thirty, social media does get to you. People online with success and happiness can be a positive influence, but then people with questionable content and behaviors may be harmful. This sheds light on the importance of the company we keep. Keeping in touch with people who have goals and who model kindness are needed more. Especially for people who struggle with mental health issues.

What are some of the emerging trends in the styling industry?

Fashion Designing in India has matured and boomed over the years.India always had a rich culture and a well-developed craft tradition. The rituals, practices and festivals are all design manifestations, with a profound purpose behind them. These traditions and crafts provide a wonderful  inspiration towards looking at and understanding modern design. Dynamic styles of clothes boost  India’s textile and fashion industry. India’s heritage in exotic fabric design, costumes and handicrafts has significantly added to the existing potential for more creative approach to growth in the field of fashion. The scope of fashion design is not limited to designing outfits; it covers a wider area of design which also consists of jewelry, footwear, accessories, luggage, etc. Since the fashion industry is an ever-expanding sector, its growth is the evidence that the industry is here to stay.
