Neeraj Chopra: India’s Golden Athlete

What a golden evening it is! A historic win by Neeraj Chopra has given the much-awaited gold medal to India in the Tokyo Olympics. Winning a gold medal in the Olympics, that too in a track and field event has been the unfinished dream of India. But, with India’s golden athlete’s gigantic throw, the century-long wait has been over.

As the Tokyo Olympics comes to its completion, Indians rejoiced when Neeraj Chopra dominated the men’s javelin throw event with his very first throw of 87.03 m. Moreover, he went on to improve it in the second round. His javelin covered a distance of 87.58 m in it. It is also the highest distance covered by any javelin thrower in the finals of the Tokyo Olympics’ men’s javelin throw event. Neeraj who is currently serving as a subedar in the Indian army topped the qualifying round earlier.

A billion faces cried happy tears when the 23-year-old Neeraj stood at the Olympics podium, wearing a gold medal, his face towards the Indian national flag along with the national anthem echoing. Everybody felt those goosebumps! If we say that India is squealing with joy, it would be an understatement.

Minutes after he won, rewards have been flowing in from various organisations. Firstly, Haryana’s chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced that a sum of Rs 6 Crore will be given to Neeraj. Moreover, the Haryana government will provide him with a class one category government job and a plot with a 50% concession. Afterwards, the chief minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh, will bestow a cash reward of Rs 2 Crores to the athlete. Manipur cabinet and BCCI has also declared a cash prize of Rs 1 Crore individually to Neeraj.

His gold-clinching throw’s video is going viral on social media. In the video, a massive trajectory completed by Neeraj’s javelin breaches the 85 m mark. It wonderfully shows the sporting genius of Neeraj. With this, the Indian contingent in Tokyo has won 7 medals, the highest ever, beating the London Olympics medal tally!
